20th ANNIVERSARY OF UNION DE VECINOS

16th ANNIVERSARY OF POWER

Honoring

LIBERTY HILL FOUNDATION
+
Founding members of POWER & Union de Vecinos

The w.e.LA luncheon on Sept 24th celebrates the 20th anniversary of Union de Vecinos and 16th anniversary of POWER! We will honor Liberty Hill Foundation for the 20 years of support and commitment to our organizations and movement, and our founding members, ordinary individual who have done extraordinary things. As part of the luncheon, we will feature a multi-disciplinary panel discussion with Councilmember Gil Cedillo, Executive Director of Sacred Spaces and UCI Sustainability Initiative Angela Mooney D’Arcy, and a representative from the newly formed city-wide Los Angeles Tenants Union about the moment and the movement to fight displacement and preserve gentrifying communities. Both non profits have improved the quality of life for tens of thousands of Angelenos through numerous policy changes on a local and citywide level, organizing practices that have helped with popular education programs and improvement projects, and have given voice to the most vulnerable residents.

POWER (People Organized for Westside Renewal) based in westside LA and Union de Vecinos based in eastside LA have organized residents around the issue of a fundamental human right to housing. “Housing is a human right!” is a chant, a rallying cry, and an organizing principle that has brought thousands of Angelenos together from the streets of Boyle Heights to the shores of Venice and throughout the city. Over the years the chants have grown louder as the housing crisis has only deepened. Moved to action by the growing impacts of communities being hurt by displacement and gentrification POWER (based on the westside) and Union de Vecinos (based in the eastside) formed w.e.LA. to build a city-wide movement to preserve our communities and achieve housing rights for all. La union hace la fuerza | United we are stronger.

We invite you to join us on September 24th to celebrate this unprecedented collaboration, break bread with community members from westside and eastside, engage diverse organizations, and help us build on the accomplishments of two decades of community organizing.
