Senior City Planner Jane Blumenfeld must have known
something was up when about a dozen “observers” at a
“workshop” about the city’s plans to create more housing
kept leaving together and re-entering the conference room in
the Henry Medina Parking Enforcement Building on April 24.
The “observers” were actually members of a nascent activist
group, POWER (People Organized for Westside Renewal).

Affordable housing policy amended to require 5% of
total units for very-low-income tenants

More than half a year after they blasted an
affordable housing policy for Marina del Rey for failing
to fulfill low-income housing needs, local affordable
housing proponents have hailed an updated plan that
includes requirements for very-low-income tenants.
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted
unanimously Wednesday, February 6th, to amend a Marina
del Rey affordable housing policy to include a
requirement that new developments set aside five percent
of total units for very-low-income tenants.

CCHD receives humanitarian award

The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) was
recently recognized with a Humanitarian Award by People
Organized for Westside Renewal (POWER), a community based
organization in West Los Angeles.
POWER works with low-income communities and advocates for
affordable housing, better schools, community safety, and
engaged citizenship. In July the organization recognized the
CCHD for philanthropic work that has been a consistent
change-making force in promoting human welfare and social
reform. POWER has been a recipient of national CCHD grants
for their work in the community.

Marina Affordable Housing Panel Gets an Earful

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has moved forward in an effort to establish a new affordable housing policy in Marina del Rey. The supervisors voted Tuesday, August 1st, to instruct county agencies to prepare environmental documentation with comments from the public and other interested parties on the proposed Marina del Rey affordable housing policy. A Good Food Fight? POWER Sees a Better Nutritional Way at Local Schools

January 19--A motion focused on improving nutrition and the quality of food served in the Los Angeles area schools was unanimously passed by the Los Angeles Unified School District in December 2005. Planned alterations in food items will include the reduction of trans-fat, sugar, sodium, as well as including healthier vegetarian options.
