TOPIC: Housing

by Daisy Vega, POWER Leader and Board Member, Mar Vista Gardens

Tina is still in her house because of YOU!

Tina is a public housing resident, living in Mar Vista Gardens with five children and one grandchild. She always paid her rent on time and followed the rules.  Last year, HACLA (Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles) began the eviction process against Tina and her family because of a technical problem with her lease.  Despite trying to cooperate with HACLA, she was never given the informal conference she required, and she never had a trial on her eviction.

HACLA pressured her to take a deal, and agree to move out April 9, 2015. She felt helpless, until POWER leaders told her to call us and get involved.

Even though she already had a deal with the HACLA (Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles) to move out, we decided it’s never too late to fight for what’s right. POWER and the community in Mar Vista Gardens petitioned Councilman Bonin and Fuentes to get involved and demand that HACLA re-examine her case.

April 9th came and went, and Tina is still in her home.  HACLA has promised not to take any further action against her before negotiating with POWER.  Because of our community in Mar Vista Gardens came together with POWER, we  continue to protect each other and prevent unfair evictions!

Thank you!  Please consider giving to POWER to continue organizing, educating, and keeping people in their homes!
